How the word pool is filtered and drawn
The generator holds four separate vocabularies, one each for nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Each of those is split into three difficulty tiers: common everyday words, intermediate words of the kind found in general writing, and advanced words that are longer or more specialised. Setting part of speech to any merges all four vocabularies; setting difficulty to all levels merges the three tiers.
Your remaining filters then act as sieves on that merged pool. The length band keeps words of four letters or fewer for short, five to seven letters for medium, and eight or more for long. The starting letter, if you supply one, keeps only words beginning with that letter. What survives is the candidate pool, and the generator samples from it without repeating a word within a single run, so a request for twelve words gives twelve distinct results.
If the pool ends up smaller than the number requested, you receive every word that matched rather than padded filler. Sorting is applied last, after the draw.
