Conversion Formula
Via grams (base unit)
One base unit, exact 1959 factors
Every unit is defined by how many grams it contains, and conversion runs through that base: the input is multiplied by the source unit's gram value and divided by the target unit's gram value. Showing the working as a single ratio avoids the rounding drift that creeps in when people chain several approximate steps together.
The metric side is straightforward. A milligram is 0.001 grams, a kilogram 1,000 grams and a metric tonne 1,000,000 grams. The imperial and US customary side uses the exact values agreed internationally in 1959. A pound is 453.59237 grams, and every other unit in that family derives from it: an ounce is a sixteenth of a pound, or 28.349523125 grams; a stone is 14 pounds, or 6,350.29318 grams; and a US short ton is 2,000 pounds, or 907,184.74 grams.
Because those definitions are exact rather than measured, the only imprecision in a result comes from how many decimal places you choose to display.

Worked example: 150 pounds in metric and stones
Enter 150 with pounds as the source unit. Converting to the base gives 150 x 453.59237, which is 68,038.8555 grams.
To reach kilograms, divide by 1,000: 68.039 kg. To reach stones, divide by 6,350.29318: 10.714 stone. Since a stone is exactly 14 pounds, that reads more naturally as 10 stone 10 pounds, because 10 x 14 is 140 and 150 minus 140 leaves 10. To reach ounces, divide by 28.349523125: 2,400 ounces exactly, which follows because 150 pounds times 16 ounces per pound is 2,400.
Running it the other way is just as useful. A 23 kg airline baggage allowance is 23,000 grams, divided by 453.59237, which gives 50.71 pounds, so a case weighed on a US scale at 50 pounds sits just inside the limit. A 500 g pack of flour is 500 divided by 28.349523125, or 17.64 ounces, a little over a US pound.

Mass, weight and the units that share a name
These are strictly mass conversions. Mass does not change with location, whereas weight is a force and varies with gravity, so an object that reads 70 kg on Earth would register about 11.6 kg on the Moon on a spring scale. In everyday use the two words are interchangeable, and the numbers here are what any kitchen or bathroom scale reports.
Watch for units that share names across systems. The US short ton in this tool is 2,000 pounds, which is not the same as the UK long ton of 2,240 pounds, nor the metric tonne of 1,000 kilograms. Shipping and commodity figures often move between all three, so check which is meant before converting. Stones are used for body weight in the UK and Ireland and rarely elsewhere, so a stone figure will need expressing in kilograms or pounds for most audiences.
In cooking, a fluid ounce measures volume, not weight, and the two are not interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds, derived from the exact definition that one pound equals 0.45359237 kilograms. Going the other way, one pound is 0.453592 kilograms. For rough mental conversion, double the kilogram figure and add ten percent: 70 kg becomes 140 plus 14, giving about 154 pounds.
Divide the kilograms by 6.35029 to get a decimal stone figure, then multiply the fractional part by 14 for the remaining pounds. For 68 kg, 68 / 6.35029 gives 10.71 stone; 0.71 times 14 is about 10 pounds, so 68 kg is roughly 10 stone 10 pounds.
No. A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms, about 2,204.6 pounds. A US short ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907.18 kilograms. A UK long ton is 2,240 pounds, about 1,016 kilograms. This converter handles the metric tonne and the US short ton, so confirm which definition a source is using.
One ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams, usually rounded to 28.35 g or 28 g in recipes. A US pound is 16 ounces, or 453.59 grams. Note that fluid ounces measure volume rather than weight, so a recipe calling for 8 fl oz of liquid is not asking for 227 grams.
It converts mass, which is what scales report and what recipes, baggage limits and body weight figures refer to. True weight is a force that changes with gravity. For all practical purposes on Earth the distinction does not affect the numbers, and the conversions here match any standard scale.
